I was born in New York City, but my parents moved to California in a Volkswagen van in 1974 when I was five years old. My dad became bipolar and dangerous, an experience I talk about in my memoir-in-progress. My translation of the psalms, The Complete Psalms: The Book of Prayer Songs in a New Translation, was published in 2010 by Bloomsbury. I also appeared on PBS' Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly, and have been reviewed in the Washington Post, among other periodicals. A collection of short stories set in upstate New York, where I got my MFA, is also in progress, as well as a middle grade fiction novel that takes place against a background of race and trauma. Besides writing, I'm a parent to a wonderful son and work as a counselor at a community mental health agency, where I am continually inspired by my clients.
